Mosaic Tiles....All you need to know

Mosaic Tiles....All you need to know

Jan 6th 2021

Have you ever walked into a high end building in the city or even a friends home, maybe their kitchen or bathroom, and was in awe of the tile?  It might of been a MOSAIC!  Mosaics tiles are so versatile when it comes to where to use them for a project and can really be the focus of the room depending on the colors used and the shape and style of the pattern.  Not only could mosaics be used for design in a room, they could also be used for safety and practicality depending on the finish!

Where to use mosaic tiles?

Mosaics can being used pretty much anywhere you want!  Common uses you may be familiar with are kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, floors, feature walls, shower floors, and powder rooms.  Areas you may not think you could put mosaics are fireplaces, kitchen counter tops, pools, home entry ways and even bathroom ceilings.  When deciding on which mosaic to put where, you need to consider the following aspects.  The finish of the mosaic, meaning polished, honed, textured.  As mentioned in my Polished VS Honed Blog, the same rules apply when you are talking about mosaics.  Polished is generally better for wall application in wet areas unless it has larger grout lines for traction.  Honed mosaics are what we typically recommend to safety in shower floors or bathroom floors in general because the honed material will not be as slippery when wet.  Polished mosaics are by far the most common in wall applications because not only will the pattern stand out but it will give the wall a overall glimmer and shine!  Textured is now becoming increasing popular and we recommend this for wall application.  Another factor to look at when choosing what mosaic to put where, is the approved applications for this specific item.  On LMP | Home is can be conveniently found in the item description.  If you still have more questions, our Live Agents are extremely knowledgeable on everything listed on our site.

Are mosaic tiles our of style?

NO! Mosaics have grown with the times and are evolving just like fashion and design does!  There is many different styles of mosaics as well just like clothing.  For example, waterjet mosaics are like the Gucci and Chanel of the tile world.  With elegant designs that can all be custom cut and designed to clients liking, this is the tile you are most likely to pick out for you feature wall in the master bathroom. These mosaics may be pricey but it will be the absolute focus of the room.  Waterjet mosaics are often made with the most high end marbles out there, including Calacatta gold, Azul Macauba, and Thassos to name a few and some may even have brass, stainless steel, or mother of pearl.  Regular mosaics have also come a long way from the traditional 2"x2" squares or the 1" hexagons, which we now consider to be basics, like a white t-shirt. (Basics are great for shower floors in honed!)  With different geometric and organic patterns, companies us have been able to create beautiful designs that can still be affordable to use in a large area like a full kitchen backsplash or entire entry way of a home.

Are mosaic tiles hard to install?

From our personally opinion, we like to think they are not hard to install.  Mosaics now are made into sheets that are mesh mounted for easy install right onto the surface you want to apply.  They can also be cut to fit the pattern into a specific area or even if a specific layout.

The simple answer to all the above is mosaics tiles have been around for a LONG time and they are not going anywhere fast.  With new technologies and high tech machines, we will always have new patterns and ideas that can be made into mosaics and can even take the basics to a new level.
