Get To Know Your Stones...Thassos!

Feb 11th 2020

Last time we discussed the Calacatta and the differences among the one stone. Today we are focusing on people who want to maintain a pure white appearance while still maintaining a natural essence.

This famous stone received it's name from the Greek island it was founded upon, Thassos Island. Thassos marble can be dated back during Ancient Grecian and Roman times when it was used solely for sculptures and buildings of importance. The Greeks first started using this new crisp white stone that was perfect to create statues of their Gods and Goddesses as well as their rulers. Thassos then became a large export good for Greece especially to the Romans. The ancient Romans realized Thassos was a much easier marble to sculpt allowing for a more realistic and naturalistic finish to their sculptures.

Like many other natural stones, there are variations to Thassos that inhibit certain characteristics. Thassos is a all white stone however there are three different types: A1 Extra, A2, and A3.

The lower the grade the less in quality you are going to recieve from the stone and vice versa, the higher the grade the higher the qualty.

All of our mosaics that contain Thassos are retrieved from grade A1 Extra Thassos for the perfect look!

Thassos

Here is our Lyon - Thassos with Jet Black strip, as you can see the Thassos in this mosaic is so crisp that it can easily be mistaken for white ceramic however you can easily see the difference in person as well feel the density of the stone.

When using lower grades of Thassos like A2 you will notice more variation in the stone variation that might not be appealing. Thassos is known for its clean and pure white look, when looking at Thassos that is off in color you can notice the difference.

A3 is the lowest grade for Thassos. In A3 grade Thassos you will notice small black dots that is not desired by many. As you can see in the picture above grade A3 Thassos is not as pure and crisp white compared to A1 and A2.

For someone that is looking for a pure white look without the costly prices of natural stone then porcelain or ceramic is a great option. However there are many benefits to natural stone especially choosing Thassos over white ceramic! Thassos has always been a magnificent building material for centuries, the durability is incomparable. If you are looking for a material that will last through wear and tear while still maintaining it's natural beauty then choose Thassos.

Even though white ceramic is a pure white tile, there is no depth. When you look at Thassos you can visibly see the depth of the stone, the tiny crystallized particles that come together to make the beautiful stone. Where as ceramic, you just see the color white and nothing beyond that.

When purchasing Thassos you are getting a natural stone that is durable and naturally beautiful that is perfect for any application with the proper knowledge and installation.
