Just like any other natural stone, there is natural variation in Carrara!

Carrara is often mistaken as Calacatta, a simliar marble. Carrara has a grey-bluish blurry background unlike Calacatta, that has a crisp white background. Carrara has been dated back since the 17th and 18th century and used more many notable pieces of art work.

Carrara has been used since the Ancient Roman and Greek times since it was the best natural stone for carving with. Most of the famous sculptures and buildings like the Parthenon, Trajan's Column, and the Column of Marcus Aurelius was carved from Carrara.

The Carrara quarry is found in the most north eastern part of Tuscany in Lunigiana.

Carrara

There are many different variations of Carrara. If you are interested in a more clean white marble with slight grey veining then you should stick to Statuary Carrara and Venetino Carrara. These marbles have a more subtle veining to them compared to other types of Carrara.
